Old friends Corey Conners and Brooke Henderson usually have to keep tabs on each other from afar, but this week they'll get to see one another up close. Conners and Henderson will team up once again at the Grant Thornton Invitational, a unique event where some of the best golfers from the PGA and LPGA Tours compete as pairs. The tournament is quickly becoming an annual reunion for the two graduates of Golf Canada's junior program. "Since turning professional, our careers have gone separate ways, and we haven't been able to cross paths too much," said Conners, who finished the men's season 39th on the FedEx Cup standings. "I'm always cheering her on from afar, and always have my eye on the LPGA Tour leaderboard when she's playing." Henderson, likewise, has been keeping tabs on Conners's exploits. "It's just been really fun to watch his career and cheer him on," said Henderson, who finished 13th in the women's tour's rankings. "I think this event has reconnected us, in a way, and it's been really special and great to be able to know his family and just to watch this game and be his partner here is really cool." Both were on Team Canada back in 2013 when they won the Copa de las Americas along with Albin Choi and Augusta James. Conners and Henderson also represented Canada at the last two Olympics but due to COVID-19 restrictions they didn't get to interact at the Tokyo Games in 2021. The men's and women's tournaments were on different weeks at the Paris Games this past summer. The two Canadians finished second at the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational last year with a combined score of 25 under, a shot behind New Zealand's Lydia Ko and Australia's Jason Day. "It's been great to be able to share some experiences like the Olympics and this event last year and spending more time together has been awesome," said Conners, who is from Listowel, Ont. "She's this amazing person, amazing golfer, and a fun partner at this event." The stacked leaderboard will see 16 pairs tee off on Friday at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla. Shares of Surf Air Mobility Inc. (SRFM) surged as much as 7% in morning trade on Friday to hit an eight-month high of $6.41, building on its gain of 56% during the previous session that helped the stock make up for some of its year-to-date decline. The stock reversed most of its gains, trading 0.36% lower in mid-day trade on Friday. The uptick in Surf Air Mobility’s shares comes after the company announced that its board members purchased stock from the open market. If the stock had maintained its gains, it would have pared its year-to-date decline to under 50% — most of this fall came in April, when the stock fell by over 40% after the company received a notice of possible delisting from the New York Stock Exchange. Surf Air Mobility’s chairman, Carl Albert, purchased 14,500 shares, while co-founder and board member Sudhin Shahani purchased 17,237 shares. In a wide-ranging interview with state-owned Radio New Zealand released on Nov 27, Mr Wang said that when deciding whether to join the grouping, China hoped that New Zealand would “take into account its own long-term best interests, the potential implications for regional security, and the impact on the relationship between China and New Zealand”. The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Srinagar station had forecast light rain and snowfall for the region on December 27 and 28, but the valley experienced over two feet of snow in some areas, catching residents, authorities, and travellers completely off guard. The failure of weather models to predict this intense spell of snow has raised serious questions about the accuracy and preparedness of the meteorological forecasting system in the region. The inaccurate forecast by the Meteorological Department (MET) in Jammu and Kashmir has created chaos on the ground with many travellers especially tourists found themselves stranded in life-threatening situations. People largely blame the weather department and its current incharge in Jammu and Kashmir Mukhtar Ahmad for the inaccurate prediction that caught everyone off guard. The MET had predicted light rainfall and scattered snowfall in some areas on Friday, but as the day proceeded the plains of Kashmir witnessed heavy snowfall in the afternoon that continued throughout the night leaving people stranded on all the major roads. Meteorologists and independent weather forecasters acknowledged gaps in prediction models, saying the surprise snowfall was due to the region’s unique and variable weather patterns. Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, senior scientist at the IMD, said they rely on global models from Europe, the US, Japan and others for forecasting. “None of the models, whether Indian or global, indicated snowfall of this magnitude,” Dr Mukhtar Ahmad admitted. He said models indicated some precipitation in the Jammu and Chenab Valley regions, but there was no significant indication of such heavy snowfall in south Kashmir. “No model suggested heavy snowfall for KMR Div even yesterday. As per f/c,Rain was expected for plains of JAMMU & light snow over middle & higher reaches of Chenab valley & South KMR & didn’t expect that much moisture flow over South & Central KMR,” Dr. Mukhtar wrote on X. Sonam Lotus, a senior most official in the Weather Department (IMD) in an X post, said, “Yes, we underestimated this #WesternDisturbance. Will investigate what we Missed & Grow.” The inaccurate and unpredicted weather conditions caught travellers and the administration off guard, leading to significant inconvenience and safety concerns. The heavy snowfall caused roadblocks, particularly on high-altitude routes like Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, where tourists were unprepared for the sudden weather shift. At many places, the local villagers had to unlock mosques and their homes to provide shelter to the stranded travellers. “At some places babies are found in cars without milk and other essential supplies,” as per the social media reels and videos. Around 2000 vehicles were stranded on the vital Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the valley’s lifeline due to the snow accumulation. Similarly, the flight operations at Srinagar International Airport were affected, leaving visitors stuck without proper accommodations. The failure of the MeT Department to predict the intensity of snowfall has drawn severe criticism from both locals and tourists on social media. The Hoteliers and travel agencies expressed frustration, stating that better forecasts could have allowed for more preparation and minimized disruption. People took to the social media platforms to express their frustration and backlash against the MET. Those stuck on several roads shared their ordeals, with some posting pictures of being stranded in snowbound vehicles or makeshift shelters. Others tagged the MET department and government authorities, demanding accountability for the oversight. Faizan Arif, an independent weather forecaster, called for enhanced infrastructure and investment in modern meteorological technology to avoid such forecasting errors in the future. “Advanced meteorological infrastructure and technology are urgently needed in the region,” said Arif. He said the absence of state-of-the-art equipment limits the ability to accurately predict such extreme weather events. The bill passed by the Legislature earlier this year said domestic abusers are "weaponizing" the growing remote control technology to harass, stalk and threaten survivors of domestic violence. The technology can be a small device hidden inside a vehicle or installed in the vehicle by the manufacturer or dealer to help locate the vehicle when it’s lost or stolen. The technology can then be operated through a computer or smartphone application and control several operations in a vehicle as well as identify where the car is parked or traveling, according to the legislation. Assemb. Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan), the bill’s Assembly sponsor, said that before this law survivors who were harassed by the remote technology would have to go through a lengthy process and cost of securing a court order of protection. "Abusers were trying to continue to harass their victims in this newish way," Rosenthal told Newsday Friday. "The way they were doing it was by tracking them to see where they were going in their car." "This gives them a tool to escape continued harassment," Rosenthal said. "Domestic violence survivors already have more than enough to deal with," said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Andrew Gounardes (D-Brooklyn), on Friday. "They need and deserve places where they can feel safe and secure. The last thing they should have to worry about is the frankly terrifying idea that even their own vehicle might become a tool for their abuser to stalk and harass them." The new law is also intended to help law enforcement clear a hurdle in trying to make a case against an abuser who uses the technology to harass, stalk or threaten, according to the law. Cases were hard to prove because car dealers or manufacturers — not abusers — controlled who had access to the remote control technology. `The new law, however, will require car manufacturers and auto dealers to remove an abuser’s access to remote vehicle technology when a survivor makes a request. The survivor must show proof of ownership and the abuser’s access to the remote technology must be done at no cost to the survivor. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the bill into law. It’s effective immediately. The New York Times and CBS New York have reported several cases in which women felt threatened by use of the remote technology. "For all of the positive uses of GPS, the expanded use of GPS-enabled devices has also increased the inappropriate use of technology to monitor or track a person’s location," states WomensLaw.org, a Brooklyn-based group of lawyers, teachers and advocates for survivors of domestic violence. "As GPS technology has become cheaper and more advanced, small and easily hidden devices can include GPS technology and make it harder to know which devices have tracking capabilities, enabling abusers to misuse the technology to track your location," the group stated. Under New York’s law, vehicle manufacturers and dealers in New York state must also provide information on websites and in cellphone applications on how to terminate an abuser’s access to a vehicle’s remote technology. Any manufacturer or dealer who fails to comply with the law could face a $500 civil penalty, according to the legislation. "My bill takes a simple, common sense step to ensure abusers can’t use this tech to harm people," Gounardes said in announcing the bill signing Friday. Much of the concern involves the use of GPS devices to stalk or confront survivors, according to NCSL. GPS devices can be installed in or attached to a car and data can be transmitted to a domestic abuser. The devices had gained popularity as a market for parents to keep track of their teenagers behind the wheel. In an interview on Friday with local broadcaster DR, the PM claimed she was following instructions on how to prepare issued by the country’s emergency management agency earlier this year. “I follow the authorities’ recommendations, and I think the Danes should do the same,” Frederiksen stated, citing Russia as a risk to Denmark’s security. She went on to claim “It is not because we expect an offensive war against Denmark, as we have seen in Ukraine, but the risk of another type of attack is there, such as a hybrid attack or cyberattack.” Frederiksen then cited the country’s defense intelligence services, which warned that Russia was arming so rapidly it could be in a position to attack a NATO country within a few years. “It is crucial that we stand together. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump's movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump's Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. LONDON — A woman who claimed mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor "brutally raped and battered" her in a Dublin hotel penthouse was awarded nearly 250,000 Euros ($257,000) on Friday by a civil court jury in Ireland. Nikita Hand said the Dec. 9, 2018, assault after a night of partying left her heavily bruised and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. McGregor testified that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will and said she fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. His lawyer had called Hand a gold digger.
