Hegseth meets with moderate Sen. Collins as he lobbies for key votes in the SenateBy MARY CLARE JALONICK and MATT BROWN WASHINGTON (AP) — Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Defense Department, said he had a “wonderful conversation” with Maine Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday as he pushed to win enough votes for confirmation. He said he will not back down after allegations of excessive drinking and sexual misconduct. She said she had a “good, substantive” discussion with Hegseth and “covered a wide range of topics,” including sexual assault in the military, Ukraine and NATO. But she said she would wait until a hearing, and notably a background check, to make a decision. “I asked virtually every question under the sun,” Collins told reporters as she left her office after the meeting. “I pressed him both on his position on military issues as well as the allegations against him, so I don’t think there was anything that we did not cover.” The meeting with Collins was closely watched as she is seen as more likely than most of her Republican Senate colleagues to vote against some of Trump’s Cabinet picks. She and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a fellow moderate Republican, did not shy from opposing Trump in his first term when they wanted to do so and sometimes supported President Joe Biden’s nominees for the judicial and executive branches. And Hegseth, an infantry combat veteran and former “Fox & Friends” weekend host, is working to gain as many votes as he can as some senators have expressed concerns about his personal history and lack of management experience. “I’m certainly not going to assume anything about where the senator stands,” Hegseth said as he left Collins’ office. “This is a process that we respect and appreciate. And we hope, in time, overall, when we get through that committee and to the floor that we can earn her support.” Hegseth met with Murkowski on Tuesday. He has also been meeting repeatedly with Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, a military veteran who has said she is a survivor of sexual assault and has spent time in the Senate working on improving how attacks are reported and prosecuted within the ranks. On Monday, Ernst said after a meeting with him that he had committed to selecting a senior official to prioritize those goals. Republicans will have a 53-49 majority next year, meaning Trump cannot lose more than three votes on any of his nominees. It is so far unclear whether Hegseth will have enough support, but Trump has stepped up his pressure on senators in the last week. “Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” Trump posted on his social media platform last week.
TOP PICK Travis Hunter will enter the NFL Draft after his Colorado Buffaloes season ends. Hunter, the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy , had been widely expected to forgo his senior term and enter the NFL early in 2025. ESPN's Mel Kiper lists Hunter, who plays both cornerback and wide receiver for Colorado, as the No. 1 prospect for the next draft. In a conference call with media on Thursday, Colorado’s dynamic two-way superstar confirmed he is bound for the NFL in 2025. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior said: "That's definitely for sure." And the 21-year-old intends to make history by playing on BOTH sides of the ball at the next level. READ MORE NFL NEWS Playing two positions full-time in the modern NFL has never been done before. Hunter said: "I understand that it will be a high risk, teams don't want their top pick to go down too early. "And I know they're going to want me to be in a couple packages. But I believe I can do it. Nobody has stopped me from doing it thus far. "I like when people tell me I can't do it." Most read in American Football The Jacksonville Jaguars will sprint to the podium to help resolve two roster issues at both cornerback and wide receiver if they can't trade out him. Hunter and Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders are both top candidates for the Heisman and projected top picks for next April's draft. Sanders, the son of Colorado coach Deion Sanders , the Pro Football Hall of Famer, said Hunter should win the Heisman. "If it's between me and him, I would want him to get it," Sanders said. "He does a lot of amazing things and things that haven't been done before. I'm not a selfish guy. I know what he's capable of, so I would rather him win." Hunter has increased his production at wide receiver -- setting career highs for receptions (74), receiving yards (911) and receiving touchdowns (9). Meanwhile, he has recorded three interceptions at corner and regularly logs more than 120 total snaps per game. Colorado 's only Heisman Trophy came in 1994 when it was taken home by running back Rashaan Salaam. Kiper projects Sanders as the No. 7 overall prospect and the top quarterback for the 2025 draft. By Sunni Upal, Deputy U.S. Sports Editor Deion Sanders becoming head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is a match made in heaven. It's been 30 years now since the Cowboys last won a Super Bowl and something has to change. This is "America's Team," but it has become a laughing stock and needs someone to restore them to their past glory. That candidate who takes over from Mike McCarthy at head coach must have some magic and inspiration. Step forward, Deion Sanders. Sanders, 57, is one of the best players to have ever stepped on the field and was on Dallas' team the last time they won a Super Bowl. He is quite literally 'Prime Time' and that spark is exactly what the Cowboys need. As for Deion, now is the perfect time for him to move on as well. He has taken the Buffaloes to new heights both in terms of results and popularity. His son, Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, is also in his senior year in college. Sanders could probably land a head coaching job on a legitimate national championship contender if he wants to stay in college. But a chance to coach the Dallas Cowboys may not come calling again. Colorado can reach the Big 12 championship game with wins on Saturday at Kansas and next week against Oklahoma State. Hunter’s 2024 Heisman campaign received a boost in last weekend’s 49-24 win over Utah . He hauled in his third interception of the year, had his first rushing touchdown of the year, and had five catches for 55 yards. After his performance against the Utes, Deion doubled down. “Travis is who he is,” Sanders said. “It’s supposed to go to the best college football player. I think that’s been a wrap since, what, Week 2?” Read More on The US Sun Sanders Snr's men sit second in the B12 standings, with a 6-1 record.
