MITCHELL — Nothing could’ve prepared Alex Kretzschmar for the experience the last several months has brought. But after a full season at the helm of the Dakota Wesleyan University football team, Kretzschmar is ready to turn the page to 2025. ADVERTISEMENT Kretzschmar, who has served on the Tigers coaching staff since 2022, has officially been the Tigers’ head coach since February, following former head coach Ross Cimpl’s promotion to become DWU’s athletic director. Under his guidance, DWU overcame an 0-3 start to finish the season at 4-7, playing .500 football from the team’s bye week on Sept. 21 to the end of the year. Overall, the Tigers’ ground game averaged the third-most rushing yards per game among Great Plains Athletic Conference teams, while also having five players garner all-GPAC recognition for their performances this season. With the 2024 campaign in the rear view, Kretzschmar recently sat down with the Mitchell Republic to reflect on his first season as head coach along with the team’s offseason plans, with his answers below, edited for clarity: Q: Overall, for you personally, how did your first season as DWU football’s head coach go? AK: It was definitely a learning experience, and being a first-time head coach, there’s a learning curve. I didn’t make any decision haphazardly or lightly, analyzed it and got feedback from my coaches with everything we did. There’s a reason for everything we did and why we did. Sometimes, some things worked and some things didn’t, and that’s the way it is. I’m sure any head coach would say that. I enjoyed it. It was a lot different than being a coordinator, an assistant, and being a position coach. Q: What’s been the biggest piece of advice you received that’s helped you along the way as the season progressed? ADVERTISEMENT AK: “Go with what your gut is telling you and don't try to overthink it. Whatever happens, own it, move on and then try to make it better. Make decisions as they come.” Obviously, you always want to kind of be looking a few steps ahead and being ready for any different possibilities. Ultimately, you can't predict the future. You have to make decisions with the information you have and go forward. If that information changes, then you adjust, reassess and move forward from there. Q: This season, the Tigers finished 4-7 after an 0-3 start. Looking back, what was one thing about this group that stood out the most? AK: They were willing to take that look in the mirror and say, “What do we need to do to be better? What is truly holding us back?” Those are hard conversations for some guys but to their credit, the whole team was like, “We have to change. Otherwise, it's going to be more of the same.” Our bye week practices were intense because the guys were putting in full effort and competing. It made those three practices extremely fun. We had to make that correlation of why they’re having fun is because they were out there competing and that's what we needed to continue to do throughout the season and we'd start to see the results. Q: Which game this year is the most memorable from the standpoint of the players executing the game plan to how everyone acted throughout the full 60 minutes? AK: From the standpoint of "Let’s go out here and get this done," that was our Oct. 5 win against Hastings. The guys had a little bit of a different fire behind them. They were ready to go out there and compete. We ran into some adversity prior to the start of the game and the guys responded well. We were able to cause a turnover on defense and get the ball back. On that next drive, we were able to go down and score, and that kind of spawned everything. In the second half, we started with the ball, ran three plays for 70 yards, and kind of just went from there. ADVERTISEMENT Q: Looking ahead, what did you tell the Tigers players to focus on during the offseason, and how do you see potential recruits fit in with what the team is trying to achieve? AK: We're going to play the best players that we can. Even the guys that were starters realized they have to level their game up and work to get better. It starts in the weight room and working on skill development outside of the weight room, such as getting faster, getting quicker, all that type of stuff and getting in better shape. We're recruiting high-character individuals who will represent our program at the university well and trying to recruit the best football players we can. One of the greatest compliments anyone that plays this sport can get is, “That guy's a football player.” You have to be able to have guys that can play certain positions, but ultimately, we're looking for young men that want to go out there and compete. Q: What do you ultimately want to take away from this season? AK: You never know when you're going to be called to do something, and when you are, you have to be all in. Last year at this time, I would never have thought that I was going to become the head coach. This opportunity presented itself because of an opportunity that was presented to coach Cimpl. There's always things that you can do better. There's always things that you can continue to work on and make your strengths stronger and, but then also continue to work on your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. That doesn't happen unless you go all in. All the credit goes to the players. They worked hard, got better, and grew as individuals, teammates and as a team. ALBANY — A new law aims to end harassment of domestic violence survivors in their motor vehicles through remote manipulation of global positioning satellite devices, automatic starters, temperature controls and more. The bill passed by the Legislature earlier this year said domestic abusers are "weaponizing" the growing remote control technology to harass, stalk and threaten survivors of domestic violence. The technology can be a small device hidden inside a vehicle or installed in the vehicle by the manufacturer or dealer to help locate the vehicle when it’s lost or stolen. The technology can then be operated through a computer or smartphone application and control several operations in a vehicle as well as identify where the car is parked or traveling, according to the legislation. Assemb. Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan), the bill’s Assembly sponsor, said that before this law survivors who were harassed by the remote technology would have to go through a lengthy process and cost of securing a court order of protection. "Abusers were trying to continue to harass their victims in this newish way," Rosenthal told Newsday Friday. "The way they were doing it was by tracking them to see where they were going in their car." "This gives them a tool to escape continued harassment," Rosenthal said. "Domestic violence survivors already have more than enough to deal with," said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Andrew Gounardes (D-Brooklyn), on Friday. The last thing they should have to worry about is the frankly terrifying idea that even their own vehicle might become a tool for their abuser to stalk and harass them." The new law is also intended to help law enforcement clear a hurdle in trying to make a case against an abuser who uses the technology to harass, stalk or threaten, according to the law. Cases were hard to prove because car dealers or manufacturers — not abusers — controlled who had access to the remote control technology. `The new law, however, will require car manufacturers and auto dealers to remove an abuser’s access to remote vehicle technology when a survivor makes a request. The survivor must show proof of ownership and the abuser’s access to the remote technology must be done at no cost to the survivor. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the bill into law. It’s effective immediately. The New York Times and CBS New York have reported several cases in which women felt threatened by use of the remote technology. "For all of the positive uses of GPS, the expanded use of GPS-enabled devices has also increased the inappropriate use of technology to monitor or track a person’s location," states WomensLaw.org, a Brooklyn-based group of lawyers, teachers and advocates for survivors of domestic violence. "As GPS technology has become cheaper and more advanced, small and easily hidden devices can include GPS technology and make it harder to know which devices have tracking capabilities, enabling abusers to misuse the technology to track your location," the group stated. Under New York’s law, vehicle manufacturers and dealers in New York state must also provide information on websites and in cellphone applications on how to terminate an abuser’s access to a vehicle’s remote technology. Any manufacturer or dealer who fails to comply with the law could face a $500 civil penalty, according to the legislation. "My bill takes a simple, common sense step to ensure abusers can’t use this tech to harm people," Gounardes said in announcing the bill signing Friday. Much of the concern involves the use of GPS devices to stalk or confront survivors, according to NCSL. GPS devices can be installed in or attached to a car and data can be transmitted to a domestic abuser. The devices had gained popularity as a market for parents to keep track of their teenagers behind the wheel. AUSTIN, Texas — It's a chance to walk across the graduation stage without having to walk through debt for the rest of their lives. While the reaction has mostly been excitement about the University of Texas system to expand its free tuition program , some state lawmakers claim it's an abuse of power. UT system chairman Kevin Eltife said the expansion to their "Promise Plus" program is a game changer. "This is so meaningful for so many people," Eltife said. "There are so many people who think they don't have the opportunity to go on to higher education. They think it's out of their reach." The expansion will provide free tuition to families who make less than $100,000 annually. The board started the program in 2019, providing free tuition for families who made less than $65,000. But with the cost of living and tuition rising across the nation, the board wanted to make a change. While the reaction has mostly been excitement about the University of Texas System Board of Regents plan to expand the free tuition program, some state lawmakers claim it's an abuse of power. After the announcement, State Rep. Brian Harrison posted on social media that the move was "an absolute abuse of power by executive branch bureaucrats" because the "Legislature never approved it." But for many others, the expansion of this program is a sigh of relief. "People are celebrating this. This is a relief," said founder and CEO of Access College America Dale Price. "This is a relief. Parents are really, really excited that they now have opportunities that send their kid to college that is not going to put them in debt for the rest of their life." Price owns a college consulting agency and works with incoming college students and their parents. He said getting rid of the barrier to higher education is going to open up many new doors for them. "That alone is going to be great because if they want to continue their education for grad school, or maybe they want to look at making a housing purchase, they have these opportunities," Price said. "They're not taking this debt with them to the grave." Now that the board has taken their official vote on the project, $35 million will be immediately going to each of the UT campuses for financial aid. The Board said more than 7 million Texas families will be eligible for this expanded program. The board also said they're not done with the project and will continue to look for ways to build on the endowments to increase the income level they provide free tuition to.
