NoneOTTAWA — Two senior members of the federal cabinet were in Florida Friday pushing Canada's new border plan with Donald Trump's transition team, a day after Trudeau himself appeared to finally push back at the president-elect over his social media posts about turning Canada into the 51st state. Both Trudeau and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who Trudeau has been courting to become Canada's next finance minister, shared posts on X Thursday, a day after Trump's latest jab at Canada in his Christmas Day message. It isn't clear if Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who has repeatedly insisted Trump's 51st state references are a joke, will raise the issue with Trump's team when he and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly meet with them in Palm Beach. The two are there to discuss Canada's new $1.3 billion border plan with just under four weeks left before Trump is sworn in again as president. He has threatened to impose a new 25 per cent import tariff on Canada and Mexico the same day over concerns about a trade imbalance, as well as illegal drugs and migration issues at the borders. The broad strokes of Canada's plan were made public Dec. 17, including a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of the border, and improved efforts using technology and canine teams to seek out drugs in shipments leaving Canada LeBlanc's spokesman, Jean-Sébastien Comeau, said the ministers will also emphasize the negative impacts of Trump's threatened tariffs on both Canada and the U.S. Comeau said the ministers will build on the discussions that took place last month when Trudeau and LeBlanc met Trump at Mar-a-Lago just days after Trump first made his tariff threat. It was at that dinner on Nov. 29 when Trump first raised the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state, a comment LeBlanc has repeatedly since insisted was just a joke. But Trump has continued the quip repeatedly in various social media posts, including in his Christmas Day message when he said Canadians would pay lower taxes and have better military protection if they became Americans. He has taken to calling Trudeau "governor" instead of prime minister. Trudeau had not directly responded to any of the jabs, but on Thursday posted a link to a six-minute long video on YouTube from 2010 in which American journalist Tom Brokaw "explains Canada to Americans." The video, which originally aired during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, explains similarities between the two countries, including their founding based on immigration, their trading relationship and the actions of the Canadian Army in World War 2 and other modern conflicts. "In the long history of sovereign neighbours there has never been a relationship as close, productive and peaceful as the U.S. and Canada," Brokaw says in the video. Trudeau did not expand about why he posted a link to the video, posting it only with the words "some information about Canada for Americans." Carney, who is at the centre of some of Trudeau's recent domestic political troubles, also called out Trump's antics on X Thursday, calling it "casual disrespect" and "carrying the 'joke' too far." "Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership," said Carney, who Trudeau was courting to join his cabinet before Chrystia Freeland resigned as finance minister last week. Freeland's sudden departure, three days after Trudeau informed her he would be firing her as finance minister in favour of Carney, left Trudeau's leadership even more bruised than it already was. Despite the expectation Carney would assume the role, he did not and has not made any statements about it. LeBlanc was sworn in as finance minister instead the same day Freeland quit. More than two dozen Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau to resign as leader, and Trudeau is said to be taking the holidays to think about his next steps. He is currently vacationing in British Columbia. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 27, 2024. Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named Andrew Ferguson as the next chair of the Federal Trade Commission. He will replace Lina Khan, who became a lightning rod for Wall Street and Silicon Valley by blocking billions of dollars’ worth of corporate acquisitions and suing Amazon and Meta while alleging anticompetitive behavior. It was one of several evening announcements Trump made via his social media platform, including that he was naming Kimberly Guilfoyle as Ambassador to Greece, a longtime supporter who was engaged to his son Don Jr., and ally and former inaugural chairman Tom Barrack as Ambassador to Turkey. Ferguson is already one of the FTC’s five commissioners, which is currently made up of three Democrats and two Republicans. “Andrew has a proven record of standing up to Big Tech censorship, and protecting Freedom of Speech in our Great Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding, “Andrew will be the most America First, and pro-innovation FTC Chair in our Country’s History.” The replacement of Khan likely means that the FTC will operate with a lighter touch when it comes to antitrust enforcement. The new chair is expected to appoint new directors of the FTC’s antitrust and consumer protection divisions. “These changes likely will make the FTC more favorable to business than it has been in recent years, though the extent to which is to be determined,” wrote Anthony DiResta, a consumer protection attorney at Holland & Knight, in a recent analysis. Deals that were blocked by the Biden administration could find new life with Trump in command. For example, the new leadership could be more open to a proposed merger between the country’s two biggest supermarket chains, Kroger and Albertsons, which forged a $24.6 billion deal to combine in 2022. Two judges halted the merger Tuesday night. The FTC had filed a lawsuit in federal court earlier this year to block the merger, claiming the deal would eliminate competition, leading to higher prices and lower wages for workers. The two companies say a merger would help them lower prices and compete against bigger rivals like Walmart. One of the judges said the FTC had shown it was likely to prevail in the administrative hearing. Yet given the widespread public concern over high grocery prices, the Trump administration may not fully abandon the FTC’s efforts to block the deal, some experts have said. And the FTC may continue to scrutinize Big Tech firms for any anticompetitive behavior. Many Republican politicians have accused firms such as Meta of censoring conservative views, and some officials in Trump’s orbit, most notably Vice President-elect JD Vance, have previously expressed support for Khan’s scrutiny of Big Tech firms. Barrack, a wealthy financier, met Trump in the 1980s while helping negotiate Trump’s purchase of the renowned Plaza Hotel. He was charged with using his personal access to the former president to secretly promote the interests of the United Arab Emirates, but was acquitted of all counts at a federal trial in 2022. Trump called him a “well-respected and experienced voice of reason.” Guilfoyle is a former California prosecutor and television news personality who led the fundraising for Trump’s 2020 campaign. Trump called her “a close friend and ally,” and praised her “sharp intellect make her supremely qualified.” She had been engaged to Don Jr. since 2020, they arrived together at the convention center on election night and she was on stage with the family. “I am so proud of Kimberly. She loves America and she always has wanted to serve the country as an Ambassador. She will be an amazing leader for America First,” Don Jr. posted. Trump also announced Tuesday that he had selected Jacob Helberg as the next undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment, and Dan Bishop as deputy director for budget at the Office of Budget and Management. ___ Advertisement Advertisement

The controversy surrounding the Society’s Registration Amendment Act 2024, commonly referred to as the madressah bill, has concluded in an opaque and anticlimactic manner. President Zardari has given his assent to the bill, allowing it to become law, but the reasoning and processes behind its passage remain as unclear as ever. If the ruling coalition harboured reservations about the bill, one might assume it would have refrained from promising its passage to Maulana Fazlur Rahman of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl). Instead, the government not only committed to enacting the bill as part of a deal to secure the Maulana’s support for other critical legislative priorities but also saw it through the parliamentary process. Once that commitment was made, one would expect the government to stand by its word, regardless of any discomfort with the consequences. Yet, what followed was a display of indecision and contradiction. The government appeared to want it both ways—advancing its legislative agenda while simultaneously distancing itself from the madressah bill. The situation escalated when the President publicly criticised the bill, labelling it a controversial and unwise measure. This created the impression that the legislation might face further scrutiny in parliament, perhaps offering a rare opportunity for transparent debate on its provisions and implications. China to cut import tariffs on some recycled copper and aluminium raw materials However, any such hope was short-lived. Without additional debate or clarity, the President abruptly signed the bill into law. This move brought the JUI-F back into the government’s fold, yet it left the public questioning the entire episode. What was the purpose of the delay? Were there behind-the-scenes negotiations that resolved the impasse? The answers to these questions remain elusive. For now, the madressah bill is law, but the lack of transparency and the mixed signals from the government have reduced this entire controversy to an exercise in public confusion. Whether the motivations behind this legislation will ever be fully revealed remains uncertain, leaving the public to wonder what, if anything, was gained through this murky political manoeuvring. Holiday shoppers increased spending by 3.8% despite higher pricesIn recent years, the scales of Western New York’s storied Canisius/St. Joe’s rivalry have tipped in the Crusaders’ favor. On a cold, rainy Saturday at the Stransky Sports Complex in West Seneca, Elijah Kimble and the Crusaders pushed a little firmer down on the plate. Canisius Crusader running back Elijah Kimble (0) carries St Joe’s Marauder Giorgio Panepinto (1) during the first half of the Monsignor Martin Division A football final against St. Joe’s at the Stransky Athletic Complex in Orchard Park on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024. (Joed Viera/Buffalo News) Canisius’ sophomore sensation rumbled for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns as Canisius defeated St. Joe’s 32-22 for its first Monsignor Martin football championship since 2020. Kimble scored three of those touchdowns in the first half alone. “We had a talk that we weren’t going to feel how we felt last year during that one-point loss. We definitely don’t feel that way this year,” Kimble said, referring to Canisius’ 21-20 loss to St. Francis in last year’s championship. Canisius now leads the all-time series 51-48-3. The Crusaders have beaten their Kenmore rivals in the last 11 matchups and have won 21 of the past 22 games. Canisius was also playing in memory of 2024 graduate and former football player Kevon Walker, who died suddenly Nov. 4 at St. Francis University, where he was a member of the Red Flash team. Crusaders coach Kraig Kurzanski wore a special T-shirt under his quarter-zip jacket in memory of Walker. “I just hugged his mom. It’s such a tragic thing. It bonded our guys together the last couple of weeks,” Kurzanski said. After its first drive stalled deep in St. Joe’s territory, Canisius forced a St. Joe’s punt and started on the Marauders’ 49-yard line after a personal foul. Kimble took the first snap over the left side and accelerated into the open field for a touchdown, showcasing the blend of field vision and speed that has drawn the eye of schools such as Ohio State, Penn State and Ole Miss. Amari Wallace’s sack ended St. Joe’s next drive and gave Canisius the ball on the Marauders’ 29. A few plays later, Kimble had his second touchdown of the day, this one coming on a 12-yard run. “It felt great,” Kimble said. “Everybody gets their nerves, I had my nerves earlier in the day, but I came out, prayed to God and he came through.” The Crusaders’ defense neutralized the St. Joe’s ground game and forced another three-and-out. Canisius received the ball on the St. Joe’s 46 and drove downfield toward the goal line, and Amir Hernandez finished the job with a 2-yard touchdown on fourth down. “It felt great coming out here and dominating, getting them early in the start. It felt great,” Hernandez said. Kimble put the exclamation point on the first half with a 70-yard touchdown run down the left sideline. A trick play on the ensuing 2-point conversion failed, leaving Canisius with a 26-0 lead. St. Joe’s took advantage of a costly pass interference call and put together a drive capped by Rozek’s 8-yard touchdown catch, though the 2-point conversion was stuffed. “The kids didn’t quit, they fought to the end,” St. Joe’s coach Mike Corona said. “I told them at halftime: You've got to get over this and figure it out, and they did. The offense woke up, the defense settled down. They’re learning the things that, I think, will make them good people.” The third quarter went by quickly with Canisius maintaining its 26-6 lead. St. Joe’s made it 26-14 after Rozek leaked out for a 6-yard touchdown catch, but the Crusaders kept pace. Kimble plunged into the end zone on the following possession for a 3-yard touchdown run. St. Joe’s still didn’t go easily. With 3:35 to go, Klein hit senior George Kunz for a 37-yard score and the Marauders successfully recovered the ensuing onside kick. However, on third down at the Canisius 24, Hernandez intercepted Klein to ice the comeback and secure the title. “If it weren’t for Elijah, everybody would know who (Hernandez) is, right? He’s a really good defender and he’s an excellent running back,” Kurzanski said. Kimble was named the Monsignor Martin playoffs MVP after the game for his performance. He had eight touchdowns and more than 500 yards in two playoff games. Canisius will play Iona Prep for the state championship next Saturday at the Stransky Complex.
