Three of Canada’s biggest oil producers, Suncor Energy SU.TO, Cenovus Energy CVE.TO and Imperial Oil IMO.TO, on Thursday projected higher production in 2025, betting on resilient demand for Canadian crude in U.S. and international markets. Fuel demand in the United States, the biggest destination for Canadian crude, is expected to rise next year as U.S. industrial activity will likely benefit from a cut in borrowing rates, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Oil exports to the U.S. could slow, however, if incoming U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on his pledge to add a25% tariff to Canadian goods unless Ottawa clamps down on the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs across the border. Calgary, Alberta-based Suncor forecast 2025 production to be between 810,000 and 840,000 barrels per day (bpd) next year, a 4.4% rise at midpoint compared to projected output for 2024. More noteworthy, BMO Capital Markets Analyst Randy Ollenberger said in a note, is that the company is well-positioned to beat its 2024 production guidance of 770,000-810,000 bpd “raising the question whether a repeat could occur in 2025.” Cenovus forecast a 4.4% increase in 2025 crude output, targeting 805,000 to 845,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, primarily driven by the start-up of the Narrows Lake oil sands project. Imperial Oil, majority-owned by Exxon Mobil Corp XOM.N, expects a 3.1% production increase. Canadian producers are benefiting from the start-up of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion earlier this year, which has nearly tripled the flow of oil to Canada’s Pacific Coast from landlocked Alberta, boosted the price of Canadian crude and opened up market access to refineries in Asia and the U.S. West Coast. Suncor also forecast a slight rise in refinery throughput volumes to between 435,000 and 450,000 bpd in 2025. The company forecast capital spending for 2025 would fall 3% from this yearto between C$6.1 billion ($4.31 billion) and C$6.3 billion. Imperial expects to spend C$1.9 billion-C$2.1 billion in 2025, above analysts’ estimates, and also increased its 2024 capital expenditure by 9% to C$1.85 billion. Company CEO Brad Corson said the higher spending was mainly related to the timing of multi-year projects and opportunities such as additional drilling at its Cold Lake oil sands project. “Where it makes sense for us to accelerate some of that work we’re doing that, so we can be most efficient with the capital dollars,” Corson told analysts on a call. Imperial shares were last down 6% on the Toronto Stock Exchange at C$97.85. Suncor shares were last down 1.8% at C$53.09, while Cenovus, which expects to keep 2025 capital spending broadly in line with 2024, dipped 0.7% to C$21.55. At the time, the council was governed by four Government-appointed commissioners, who had been in their roles since 2021. Their terms were coming to an end in July 2024 and Tauranga would be electing their new representatives for the first time since 2019. I grew up in Tauranga and I’ve always been passionate about the city and its future. The unique opportunity to make a significant difference made it a reasonably easy decision for me to run (my wife, Juliette, took a little more convincing). My grandfather, Sir Bob Owens, was Mayor of Tauranga and Mayor of the Mount Maunganui Borough before they were amalgamated. Most of his term was before my time but I was aware of the significant impact he had on the city’s future. He played a major role in my early years, and I credit him with driving my interest in business and investing. This year, I was incredibly proud to be elected mayor alongside an impressive line-up of ward councillors from across the city. And we got stuck-in straight away. Now that we’ve been in our governance roles for nearly six months, I think we’re coming to terms with Tauranga’s problems and challenges, as well as the big opportunities we have to help make our city a great place to live, work, learn and play in. We know how tough things are economically and many ratepayers are struggling. We need to ensure we are financially prudent. Alongside this, we are mindful that costs have escalated throughout the country and that councils aren’t immune to these increases too. The reality is Tauranga is a city that has rapidly grown, and which has been underinvested in infrastructure and community amenities for many years. This presents a challenge because we have to play catch-up, prioritise and deliver as much as we can, but at a reasonable cost, taking into account affordability and value for money. Given that scenario, I have three wishes for 2025 to help move our city forward. The population of Tauranga City more than doubled between 1996 and 2023 and the city’s residents are getting younger. They represent our future. The decisions we’re making today are not purely for us, they are for the future, younger members of our fast-growing community, and that brings challenges we can’t solve on our own. We need to ensure we have more housing capacity and that homes are affordable, and that we have the infrastructure we need to support a growing economy. That means finding a balance that maintains our growth infrastructure investment, while delivering good outcomes for our people. And that’s where building good relationships comes into play. We can’t catch up on the historical underinvestment in our city alone. Tauranga City Council needs to build and maintain strong relationships with central Government, tangata whenua, our many community organisations, and the business community. Partnering with our stakeholders can contribute in a meaningful way to economic growth, as well as delivering facilities which will help our communities thrive. As mayor, I’m focused on developing those relationships as we continue to work to revitalise our city. Over the last few years, we’ve seen articles and heard comments about Tauranga’s ‘dead’ city centre, but I can assure you that we have turned a corner, and our life-signs are pointing to a strong recovery. In the last year, investment has transformed Masonic Park, opened the new Waterfront Boardwalk and connecting railway underpass providing access to our stunning harbour, and redeveloped the Northern Waterfront Reserve with its great destination playground. These areas will be well-loved spots for the people of Tauranga for many years to come. The private sector is also investing heavily in Tauranga, with key projects well underway in the city centre and out in high-growth areas. Our immediate focus for the next 18 months is to balance council’s operational budget and deliver as much as possible within our financial constraints. And though that means we’re looking closely at costs and spending, it’s still our intention to keep investing in the things that will make Tauranga a great city. It’s satisfying to see what’s been achieved already, and the projects transforming our city come to life, but we know there’s more to do. I believe in the power of teams, and if we continue working together, Tauranga will reach its potential of being the best city in the country. Another big wish for 2025 is to be invited to work on a regional deal with the Government. Regional deals are a new policy initiative where Government and a region will work together to unlock opportunities for economic growth, provide connected and resilient infrastructure and improve the supply of housing. Our neck of the woods is strategically important to New Zealand. We’re a gateway to global trade and one of the fastest-growing cities, but our growth is severely constrained by a lack of housing stock and a congested transport network. The Western Bay of Plenty subregion has grown faster than any other in the last 20 years. Along with Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, tangata whenua and economic development agency Priority One, we want to work in partnership with the Government to provide the tools and policy settings we need to enable new housing and business development at pace, allowing growth to pay for growth. Probably the biggest advantage of a regional deal is delivering certainty when partnering with Government. We have our fingers crossed for good news in 2025 as we work to submit our proposal. There are a number of reasons Tauranga is one of the fastest growing cities in New Zealand. Our unique coastal lifestyle, excellent schools, employment and business opportunities and diverse and inclusive communities make Tauranga a fantastic place to live and raise a family. Century-old department store Nordstrom has agreed to be acquired and taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group in a $6.25 billion deal with the industry being squeezed by discount chains and other competition. Public companies are under a lot more scrutiny and if private, the Nordstrom family may have more leeway in reviving a department store chain that has been attempting to reinvigorate sales for years. Nordstrom shareholders will receive $24.25 in cash for each share of Nordstrom common stock, or about $4 billion in all, representing a 42% premium on the company's stock as of March 18, when reports of a potential transaction was reported by the media. The acquiring group will also pick up more than $2 billion in Nordstrom debt. The traditional department stores have suffered in the face of withering competition from giants like Walmart and Target, as well as a host of fast-fashion bands and Amazon.com . Nordstrom rivals Macy's and Kohl's have been pressured by major investors to make huge changes in order to return more profit to shareholders. Sales at Nordstrom have essentially flatlined over the past decade or so and it announced last year that it was closing all of its Canadian stores and cutting 2,500 jobs as it winds down operations in the country. Nordstrom first announced plans to expand to Canada in 2012 and opened its first store in Calgary at CF Chinook Centre in September 2014. The offer announced today tops the previous $23-per-share bid that the Nordstrom family and Mexican retail group, El Puerto de Liverpool, made in September. The board also plans to authorize a special dividend of up to 25 cents per share, based on Nordstrom’s cash on hand immediately prior to and contingent on the close of the transaction. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2025, at which time the company's shares will no longer trade publicly. “While a change in ownership does not automatically remedy all of the problems with the department store operation, it will allow the family and their backers to take a long-term view of the business and make necessary investments and changes away from the short-term scrutiny of public markets,” wrote Neil Saunders, Managing Director of GlobalData, in a note to clients. Nordstrom’s board of directors unanimously approved the the proposed transaction, with members Erik and Pete Nordstrom, part of the Nordstrom family taking over the company — recusing themselves from that vote. Following the close of the transaction, the Nordstrom family will have a majority ownership stake in the company. Erik and Pete Nordstrom are the fourth-generation leadership at the Seattle retailer, which was founded in 1901 as a shoe store. Erik is the company’s chief executive and Peter is president. After opening 23 new stores so far this year, the company now operates a combined 381 Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores in the U.S. Nordstrom shares fell about 1.5% today, but they are up 34% this year on rumors of a family takeover. The company's stock is still down considerably from post-pandemic highs above $40 per share. In May of this year, Bruce Nordstrom, a retail executive who helped expand his family’s Pacific Northwest department store chain into an upscale national brand, died at age 90. He was one of several Nordstrom family members who in 2017 made a push to take the company private, proposing to buy out the 70% of the department store’s stock they didn’t already own. (AP) — At least 6,000 inmates escaped from a high-security prison in Mozambique's capital on Christmas Day after a rebellion, the country's police chief said, as widespread post-election riots and violence are roiling the country. Police chief Bernardino Rafael said 33 prisoners died and 15 others were injured during a confrontation with the security forces. The prisoners fled during violent protests that have seen police cars, stations and infrastructure destroyed after the country's Constitutional Council confirmed the ruling Frelimo party as the winner of the October 9 elections. The escape from the Maputo Central Prison, located 14 kilometres (9 miles) southwest of the capital, started around midday on Wednesday after “agitation” by a “group of subversive protesters” nearby, Rafael said. Samsung has a new way for Galaxy users to play games. The device manufacturer has been working on getting into the gaming space for a couple years, and its latest venture is a free mobile gaming platform that’ll let you stream Android games through the cloud on a Galaxy device. The program entered beta last year in the Gaming Hub , and is now available to the public. There will be 23 games available at launch, including Monopoly Go , Candy Crush Saga , and Honor of Kings . My first question when I saw the news: What is this for? Downloading mobile games isn’t usually taxing on a device the way a large AAA game might be on a console or PC. Most people also have a mobile device they can play games on, which is very different than not having a gaming PC or console. But there’s a couple ways this tech could be used. If you don’t have enough storage space on your smartphone (very possible considering few phones these days come with expandable storage), you can stream a game instead of playing it locally. This will be a boon as games get bigger. Samsung says that this is its way to keep up with streaming in other industries. The logic is that if you can stream your favorite TV shows instantly, why not be able to do so with games? “Unlike other cloud services, there is no content gated behind a paywall and no monthly subscriptions for users to access these games via our cloud streaming tech,” Jong Woo, Samsung head of game services, said to GamesIndustry.biz . Mike Tyson , 58, is embroiled in a €1.46 million ($1.59 million) legal battle after allegedly breaching an agreement with a gambling promotional company by fighting 27-year-old Jake Paul in November . The lawsuit was filed by Medier, a media company promoting gambling brand Rabona, accusing Tyson of failing to honor a deal signed with the Cyprus-based business in January. The legal action was initiated at London's High Court in October, prior to the fight. Tyson and his fighting venture Tyrannic are said to have reneged on their agreement with Medier in March, citing a breach of their own. The fight against Paul , initially scheduled for July 20, was announced on the same day. Past recipients include global icons such as American actress Meryl Streep, the late British rocker David Bowie, British pop star Adele, and Colombian Latin pop hitmaker Shakira. For Charles, whose career intertwines the rhythms and melodies of the Caribbean into the vibrant discourse of jazz, the honour is both humbling and validating. ‘It’s still setting in,’ he admitted, during a WhatsApp chat with the Kitcharee. ‘Being recognised by France with this award for my work is a warming feeling and a magnanimous honour for which I will forever be grateful. As an ambassador, I feel like it gives our art, stories, and culture wider reach.’ Charles joins an elite group of jazz luminaries such as Miles Davis and Quincy Jones to receive this title. For the 41-year-old, this milestone symbolises both personal achievement and regional pride. Steeped in Caribbean influences, Charles’ music is celebrated for its fusion of traditional rhythms and contemporary jazz. ‘Learning the story to tell it is the most crucial part of my creative process,’ he said. ‘Whether it’s an old story or one that has never been written, getting the picture, scene, movements, and characters in my imagination makes it a more palpable piece. At an unrelated news conference in Englewood, the mayor again told reporters that “like everybody else,” he learned about the sexual harassment, misogyny, racism, antisemitism and homophobic complaints against Reese after a Freedom of Information Act request was made. The Tribune filed a FOIA for those records on Oct. 25, after news broke that the mayor’s longtime friend and former press secretary for his mayoral campaign and for the Chicago Teachers Union was being fired. But Oct. 19 texts that the Tribune also obtained via FOIA show the mayor making an apparent reference to Reese while messaging CTU President Stacy Davis Gates just four days before Reese was given notice of his termination. “Ronnie!” he wrote. “Call me. Message from the Elders.” Davis Gates responded to the apparent reference to Reese, who previously worked with her and Johnson at the teachers union, with only an exclamation reaction, according to a copy of the text exchange. She said this week that she did not engage further nor know about the accusations surrounding Reese until the Tribune reported on them. Johnson on Thursday addressed his October texts by saying, “I have conversations and text messages with a variety of people, and I’ve communicated to Stacy on a number of occasions of where there are opportunities for us to continue to grow our city through the lens of public education.” Asked why he couldn’t elaborate on what he wanted to discuss with Davis-Gates concerning Reese, the mayor merely said, “I’m actually saying more than more. ... The study, which focused on titanium peroxides, builds on their earlier research into vanadium peroxides. The research is part of large-scale federal effort to innovate new methods and materials for direct air capture, or DAC, of carbon dioxide, produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Findings of the research, led by May Nyman and Karlie Bach of the OSU College of Science, were published today in Chemistry of Materials . Nyman's team is exploring how some transition metal complexes can react with air to remove carbon dioxide and convert it to a metal carbonate, similar to what is found in many naturally occurring minerals. Transition metals are located near the center of the periodic table and their name arises from the transition of electrons from low energy to high energy states and back again, giving rise to distinctive colors. Facilities that filter carbon dioxide from the air are still in their infancy. Technologies for mitigating carbon dioxide at the point of entry into the atmosphere, such as at power plants , are more mature. At present there are a combined 18 active direct air capture plants operating in the United States, Canada and Europe, with plans for an additional 130 around the globe. Challenges to direct air capture include big costs and high energy requirements compared to working with industrial exhausts. Additionally, the atmosphere's concentration of carbon dioxide, four parts per million, is low, challenging the performance of carbon capture materials. "We opted to look into titanium as it's 100 times cheaper than vanadium, more abundant, more environmentally friendly and already well established in industrial uses," said Bach, a graduate student in Nyman's lab. "It also is right next to vanadium on the periodic table, so we hypothesized that the carbon capture behavior could be similar enough to vanadium to be effective." Bach, Nyman and the rest of the research team made several new tetraperoxo titanate structures—a titanium atom coordinated with four peroxide groups—that showed varying abilities to scrub carbon dioxide from the air. Tetraperoxo structures tend to be highly reactive because of the peroxide groups, which are potent oxidizing agents. Related peroxotitanates have been studied for their potential uses in catalysis, environmental chemistry and materials science. However, the tetraperoxotitanates in this study had never been definitively synthesized; Bach was able to use inexpensive materials for high-yield chemical reactions. "Our favorite carbon capture structure we discovered is potassium tetraperoxo titanate, which is extra unique because it turns out it is also a peroxosolvate," Bach said. "That means that in addition to having the peroxide bonds to titanium, it also has hydrogen peroxide in the structure, which is what we believe makes it so reactive." The measured carbon capture capacity was about 8.5 millimoles carbon dioxide per gram of potassium tetraperoxo titanate—roughly double that of vanadium peroxide. "Titanium is a cheaper, safer material with a significantly higher capacity," Bach said. Named for the titans of Greek mythology, titanium is as strong as steel but much lighter. It's non-toxic, does not easily corrode and is the ninth most abundant element in the Earth's crust—found in rocks, soil, plants and even the human body in trace amounts. "The virus is primarily transmitted through surfaces and outbreaks during air travel are especially common, due to the large number of public surfaces in airports." Zhang said: "The touch data showed that, without any interventions, restaurants at airports had the highest risk of norovirus transmission, with approximately 4.6 out of 51,494 travelers infected. "Disinfecting public surfaces every two hours reduced the risk of norovirus infection per visit to the airport by 83.2%. "In contrast, handwashing every two hours reduced the risk by only 2%, and mask-wearing 50% of the time reduced risk by 48.0%, because masks stop people from touching their face. CDC "Furthermore, using antimicrobial copper or copper-nickel alloy coatings for most public surfaces lowered the infection risk by 15.9% to 99.2%." He says the study, published in the journal PLOS Computational Biology , provides "crucial" insights for developing infection prevention and control strategies specifically tailored for norovirus within airport environments. Zhang noted that the data for the study was collected during the COVID-19 pandemic , so surface-touching behaviors may have been different from normal. But he said that, overall, the simulated results indicated that public surface disinfection, mask-wearing wearing and the use of antimicrobial surfaces are effective ways of controlling the spread of norovirus via surfaces. Last season, the Tigers earned a record of 12-12, which was enough for the team to return to the Class 4A playoffs for the first time since 2021 . With a new coach this season, Summit will look to make the playoffs again this winter, but like any team, will face several challenges throughout the season. Beyond navigating a new coaching staff, Summit will also be tasked with filling the void left by the five seniors that graduated from last year’s team. Seniors included playmakers like Emilio Jain, Hank Chabot and Max Nakos as well as leaders like Matthew Valdez. Despite losing the graduating seniors, Summit has returned a group of players that are not only powerful athletes, but also have the skills necessary to be leaders on the team. Most notably, Summit will rely on the star power and expertise of senior guard Eduardo Gutierrez. Gutierrez led the team in points last season, averaging 14 points per game and scoring a total of 336 points. In addition to being able to score for the Tigers, Gutierrez possesses an ability to invigorate his teammates and harness that competitive edge that is necessary to win in close games. Another strong returner for the Tigers will be senior Alejandro Baray-Jain. Last season as a junior, Baray-Jain played in a total of 18 varsity games where he averaged 0.8 points, 0.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. Fresh off a huge football season, Baray-Jain will look to be a leader for the Tigers on the court this winter, serving as one of the team’s captains. “It is my last year, so I just want to finish off strong,” Baray-Jain said. “With Coach Buller and Coach Kimball leaving last year and Coach Lopez and Coach Kelly stepping up, we didn’t see it as a challenge — we are grateful for it everyday. Kentucky will aim to improve upon its best start in seven seasons when it hosts Western Kentucky on Tuesday night in Lexington, Ky., in the final game of the BBN Invitational. The Wildcats (5-0) are ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press poll and are setting impressive offensive milestones even for a program as tradition-rich as Kentucky, which includes eight national championships. The Wildcats have scored 97 or more points in their first four home games for the first time in program history and eclipsed the 100-point mark in three of those games. DOVER, Del. (AP) — A Delaware judge has reaffirmed her ruling that Tesla must revoke Elon Musk’s multibillion-dollar pay package Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick on Monday denied a request by attorneys for Musk and Tesla’s corporate directors to vacate her ruling earlier this year requiring the company to rescind the unprecedented pay package. McCormick also rejected an equally unprecedented and massive fee request by plaintiff attorneys , who argued that they were entitled to legal fees in the form of Tesla stock valued at more than $5 billion. The judge said the attorneys were entitled to a fee award of $345 million. The rulings came in a lawsuit filed by a Tesla stockholder who challenged Musk’s 2018 compensation package. McCormick concluded in January that Musk engineered the landmark pay package in sham negotiations with directors who were not independent. The compensation package initially carried a potential maximum value of about $56 billion, but that sum has fluctuated over the years based on Tesla’s stock price. Following the court ruling, Tesla shareholders met in June and ratified Musk’s 2018 pay package for a second time, again by an overwhelming margin. Defense attorneys then argued that the second vote makes clear that Tesla shareholders, with full knowledge of the flaws in the 2018 process that McCormick pointed out, were adamant that Musk is entitled to the pay package. They asked the judge to vacate her order directing Tesla to rescind the pay package. McCormick, who seemed skeptical of the defense arguments during an August hearing, said in Monday’s ruling that those arguments were fatally flawed. “The large and talented group of defense firms got creative with the ratification argument, but their unprecedented theories go against multiple strains of settled law,” McCormick wrote in a 103-page opinion. The judge noted, among other things, that a stockholder vote standing alone cannot ratify a conflicted-controller transaction. “Even if a stockholder vote could have a ratifying effect, it could not do so here due to multiple, material misstatements in the proxy statement,” she added. Meanwhile, McCormick found that the $5.6 billion fee request by the shareholder’s attorneys, which at one time approached $7 billion based on Tesla’s trading price, went too far. “In a case about excessive compensation, that was a bold ask,” McCormick wrote. Attorneys for the Tesla shareholder argue that their work resulted in the “massive” benefit of returning shares to Tesla that otherwise would have gone to Musk and diluted the stock held by other Tesla investors. They value that benefit at $51.4 billion, using the difference between the stock price at the time of McCormick’s January ruling and the strike price of some 304 million stock options granted to Musk. While finding that the methodology used to calculate the fee request was sound, the judge noted that the Delaware’s Supreme Court has noted that fee award guidelines “must yield to the greater policy concern of preventing windfalls to counsel.” “The fee award here must yield in this way, because $5.6 billion is a windfall no matter the methodology used to justify it,” McCormick wrote. A fee award of $345 million, she said, was “an appropriate sum to reward a total victory.” The fee award amounts to almost exactly half the current record $688 million in legal fees awarded in 2008 in litigation stemming from the collapse of Enron. Taking the witness stand on Thursday, Santa Clara Councilmember Suds Jain testified that he “assumed” Vice Mayor Anthony Becker gave the electric “Unsportsmanlike Conduct” report to a journalist before it was public — a slight deviation from testimony he gave to the criminal grand jury that indicted Becker last year. Jain said that Becker — one of his allies on the Santa Clara City Council since 2020 — had called him about two or three weeks before he was expected to testify in front of a criminal grand jury on March 29, 2023. During the phone call, Jain said that Becker admitted he had given the Santa Clara County civil grand jury report to Carolyn Schuk, an editor at the Silicon Valley Voice. Becker is currently on trial in Santa Clara County Superior Court in Morgan Hill for allegedly leaking the 2022 report — which chastised five members of the Santa Clara City Council for their relationship with San Francisco 49ers lobbyists — as well as felony perjury for allegedly lying about the leak under oath. The controversial report was supposed to be released publicly on Oct. 10, 2022, but appeared in several media outlets a few days prior. Rahul Chandhok, the 49ers’ former chief of communications, testified last week that Becker leaked him the report . During Jain’s March 29 testimony to the criminal grand jury, Deputy District Attorney Jason Malinsky asked the councilmember if Becker told him that he sent the report to a journalist “before it was public.” Jain confirmed that Becker had. But back in court on Thursday, Jain said he didn’t recall his prior testimony. “He told me that he had given the report to Carolyn Shuk,” Jain said. “I assumed it was during that period.” At one point, Malinsky showed Jain his prior testimony, to which he responded that he believed he was “confused.” The recently re-elected councilmember said that he wished Becker hadn’t told him. At the time, the two were discussing “how much stress he was under.” “I knew I had a subpoena, and it would have been better if he hadn’t told me,” he said. “It put me in a difficult position.” Jain testified that he didn’t ask his colleague any follow-up questions because he “did not want to know anymore.” When asked by a juror why Becker would have to give a journalist the report if it was already publicly available on the county’s website, Jain said “it’s possible that a reporter didn’t know where to find it. I don’t know.” Following Jain’s testimony, the prosecution played an audio recording of their interview with Becker on Dec. 28, 2022. Fernando Ramirez Jr., a criminalist with the Santa Clara County Crime Laboratory, testified as an expert witness the day prior that a forensic analysis of Becker’s phone showed that he had uninstalled Signal — the encrypted messaging app he allegedly used to leak the report — on Dec. 28 at 9:09 a.m. Becker’s meeting with Malinsky and Ben Holt, a criminal investigator with the DA’s office, commenced at 9:17 a.m. — less than nine minutes after data showed he deleted the app. In a snippet of the interview that was played for the jury, Becker said he hadn’t communicated with anyone from the 49ers “for a while.” He told Malinsky and Holt that he only used his phone’s native texting app to communicate with Chandhok, his main contact at the 49ers. Becker said he didn’t use Signal. But when asked by Malinsky if he used it in the past, he questioned why he was being asked so much about Chandhok. “Do I need a lawyer, because this is starting to get really inquisitive about my relationship with the 49ers?” Becker said. The vice mayor eventually admitted to having used the app in the past with one of his campaign staffers. When Malinsky asked Becker if he had used it to communicate with Chandhok, he said he didn’t know. “I don’t know why this is so important if we had conversations on Signal,” he said. Becker also denied leaking the grand jury report during the interview, and said he deleted Signal off of his phone “some time after the election.” The DA’s office served Becker with a search warrant following the interview.

Jake Paul wants “to set the record straight,” when no straightening is required. If anyone would understand that we moved on from his “fight” against Mike Tyson, it should be Paul, who has made a fortune in the split-second entertainment world of social media. Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions issued a statement on Monday to dispel the rumor that his fight at AT&T Stadium on Nov. 15 against Tyson was rigged. The intention is to change the narrative of what was an embarrassing, if highly profitable, evening, and maintain the interest in Paul’s boxing career. The fight was not rigged, and no statement was needed. The fight was simply awful. The statement begins: “Following the wide circulation of incorrect and baseless claims that undermine the integrity of the Paul vs. Tyson event, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) would like to set the record straight regarding the contractual agreements and the nature of the fight.” “Integrity” and “Tyson v. Paul” have no business of being in the same sentence. “Rigging a professional boxing match is a federal crime in the United States of America. Paul vs. Tyson was a professional match sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR). Both fighters in good faith performed to the best of their abilities with the goal of winning the fight,” the statement said. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations did sanction this kitten fight between a Disney kid turned YouTuber against a 58-year-old man with serious health issues. The fight had judges, and Paul was awarded a decision when none was needed. “Best of their abilities” is subjective. After landing one of his first punches, a left to Paul’s head, Tyson looked like he may have something in what was once one of the most feared boxers who ever lived. He flashed some of that old Tyson head movement, but mostly he looked like an old boxer. Because that’s what he is. The event quickly became an awkward money grab embarrassment, an indictment on the ticket-buying audience more than the promoters, who were doing their job, and leaving Netflix blushing over streaming issues. “There were absolutely no restrictions – contractual or otherwise – around either fighter. Each boxer was able to use his full arsenal to win the fight. Any agreement to the contrary would violate TDLR boxing rules,” the statement said. No restrictions is a liberal use of the term. The fight was eight rounds, not 10 or 12. The rounds lasted two minutes, not three. The gloves the boxers used were 14 oz., not 10. President Jimmy Carter could take a few shots from a 14 oz. glove. The statement continues, “Trash talk and speculation are common in sports, and athletes and promoters need to tolerate nonsensical commentary, jokes and opinions. But suggesting anything other than full effort from these fighters is not only naïve but an insult to the work they put into their craft and to the sport itself.” Accusations of rigged outcomes have been hurled at sporting events in the United States since the New York Nine defeated the Knickerbockers 23-1 in four innings, the first recorded baseball game ever played in America, in 1846. The New York Nine did not release a statement to the press that the game was rigged. Such accusations are hallow, but every now and then there is a Chicago Black Sox. “It is further illogical and inane that MVP, in the debut of a hopeful long-term partnership with the world’s biggest streamer—an organization that made its first-ever foray into live professional sports with Paul vs. Tyson—would even so much as consider such a perverse violation of the rules of competition,” the statement said. That’s not how rigged works. You don’t tell the broadcast partner that the live event is staged. Making sure his boss knows he’s working, MVP co-founder Nakisa Bidarian issued his own words to this statement, saying, “This is not the first time Jake Paul has faced unfounded skepticism or outright disbelief as a professional athlete, and frankly, the claim that his bout must have been rigged is just the latest backhanded compliment to come his way.” Paul, 27, beat a 58-year-old man in a fight that looked like two-hand touch. There is no compliment. “From day one in this sport, people have doubted his abilities — unable to reconcile how someone with his background has accomplished so much in such a short time. Jake has not only proven himself repeatedly, but he has continuously set historic records that speak for themselves,” Bidarian wrote. Paul has created a niche for himself in the sport by carefully fighting opponents who are names, but are not boxers. Older guys. Ex-UFC fighters looking for one more check. He’s also spent the necessary time to train, and learn how to box. He knows how to promote himself, and an event. He created “boxing entertainment,” but his fights are not traditional boxing matches. They are also not scripted WWE. “As long as Jake continues to exceed expectations, there will always be those who try to discredit his achievements.” Bidarian said. “We embrace the doubt — it only fuels Jake to work harder and achieve greater success.” Herein lies the “need” for this press statement. Paul wants to continue to fight, but not against fighters who may knock him out. Considering the type of money his fights have generated, he would have no problem finding a line of potential traditional opponents waiting to pummel him through the canvas. He has avoided real fighters for a reason. Because he’s smart. Because he can. Because there is a market for the fights he stages. Wall Street indexes closed higher with the S&P 500 and the Dow touching intraday records as investors approved of Donald Trump’s choice. Investors said they were hoping for tax cuts as well as fiscal caution from Bessent. U.S. Treasury yields fell sharply as bond investors bet on a more moderate than feared U.S. fiscal trajectory. In an interview published on Sunday, Bessent told the Wall Street Journal that both tax and spending cuts were priorities. And Bessent told CNBC earlier in November, before his selection as Treasury secretary, that he would recommend “tariffs be layered in gradually.” “Bessent understands a lot of different asset classes and is going to help Trump stay very sensitive to market reactions,” said Carol Schleif, chief investment officer, BMO family office noting that investors worried that other candidates for the job would take a hard stance on tariffs and spending and think less about the potential market reaction. “Markets are pretty self-centered. Speaking Monday to Israeli Army Radio, Herzog said negotiators were hammering out the final details of an agreement to clear southern Lebanon of both Hezbollah militants and Israeli troops—an effort to avoid a repeat of the devastation of the 34-day conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2006. “We are close to a deal... It can happen within days,” Herzog said, according to a report from the Associated Press. He added that approval from the Israeli government remains a must before anything is finalized. Israel is demanding the right to reply with force if Hezbollah breaches the terms, a condition Lebanon might not accept. Israel accuses the Iranian-backed militia group of ignoring the U.N. resolution that ended the 2006 conflict and fears Hezbollah could launch a Hamas-style raid into Israel if allowed to maintain its current presence near the border. Lebanon, meanwhile, says Israel routinely violates the same U.N. resolution with frequent air and naval incursions into its territory. "Even with injuries, obviously, with contract situations, with age, with coaching changes, new scheme possibly, new system. There’s a lot of unknowns, so that stuff is out of my control. “I’m just going to enjoy these times here and let the future take care of itself.” Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said Rodgers returned from the team's bye-week break appearing physically refreshed and ready to go. The quarterback was not on the Jets' injury report Wednesday for the first time since Week 4. “Definitely, as long as he’s healthy, my plan is to play him,” Ulbrich said. “And I know talking to him, that’s the way he wants to do it, too.” Rodgers, who turns 41 on Monday, has dealt with various injuries to his left leg, including a sore knee, sprained ankle and balky hamstring. A measure to bar Montana Rep. Zooey Zephyr, the state’s first transgender legislator, from using the women’s restroom at the State Capitol failed to pass the House Rules Committee on Tuesday, with several Republicans voting against it. The measure, introduced by Republican Rep. Jerry Schillinger, would have required state legislators to use the restrooms of their birth sexes. The measure “says what probably shouldn’t need to be said and puts into rules what probably shouldn’t need to be put into rules,” Schillinger said Tuesday at a meeting of the Joint House and Senate Rules Committees ahead of Montana’s next legislative session in January. The proposal, which needed support from a majority of both committees to pass, failed, with the Senate committee voting 11-7 in favor and the House committee voting 10-12 against. Zephyr — who drew international attention and became a nationally recognized face among the LGBTQ community last year when she was censured in the Montana Legislature — thanked her colleagues who voted against the measure in a statement on social media. “I’m happy to see that this proposed ban failed and am grateful for my colleagues—particularly my republican colleagues—who recognized this as a distraction from the work we were elected to do,” Zephyr wrote on X . “I’m ready to represent my constituents and look forward to working on behalf of the people of Montana.” Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution last month to prohibit any lawmakers and House employees from “using single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex.” In remarks that misgendered her, Mace told reporters that the measure was, indeed, intended to target McBride, adding that she is “absolutely 100% going to stand in the way of any man who wants to be in a women’s restroom, in our locker rooms, in our changing rooms.” She added, “I will be there fighting you every step of the way.” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he supports Mace’s effort , though his statement of support doesn’t formally change the rules package for the new congressional session, which starts in January.
